Sedative usage notice
What are these "oral sedatives"?
These oral medications can help alleviate stress in dogs and cats when visiting vet, traveling, or visiting a salon. It can safely reduce signs of stress or aggression when performing a physical exam, blood exam, ultrasound…etc.
It is now commonly employed in veterinary practice to greatly improve our patients’ vet visit experiences. Commonly used medication includes gabapentin and trazodone.
How can I get these sedatives?
If your pet has never taken these medications before, please schedule an appointment with us to provide basic information of your pet (body weight, age, prior medical history…), so our vet can prescribe tailored dosage.
A test dose can be given on a day to evaluate time of onset, duration, and any side effect.
Typically sedative effects will take 2 hrs to onset, and duration is approximately 4-6 hrs. Side effects are rare but can include profound sedation, urine incontinence, neurological signs.
Is it safe to give these drugs to my pet?
These sedative medications are generally well tolerated by clinically healthy dogs and cats, but please consult with our staff prior usage.
